What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of NDIS support that helps you perform everyday tasks, while ensuring you are safe and well at home. It is intended for NDIS participants who choose to live independently, but need support in areas like personal care, shopping, cooking and cleaning, transport, socialising, and managing their budget.

You can receive SIL supports while living in your own home or with your family, though many participants receive SIL while living in shared accommodation with other people who are also receiving SIL funding. This enables you to live independently, but still get support for daily tasks you may find challenging. By accessing individualised support, you can develop necessary skills, grow confidence in everyday life, and be safe in the community.

Please note that SIL is a different type of support from SDA. Under the NDIS, SIL provides the supports a participant receives in their home, while SDA focuses on the home itself by providing suitable accommodation for people with significant needs.
