What is Specialist Disability Accommodation?

If you have a significant disability or extreme functional impairment, Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a type of government funding for housing, designed just for you. With special modifications or features, it provides a safe space to help you live more independently and have a better quality of life.

SDA homes are built according to specific standards and guidelines, and may include features like wider doorways, hallways for wheelchairs, accessible bathrooms and assistive technology for daily tasks. The aim is to empower you to have more control over your living situations, promote independence, and encourage participation in the community.

SDA usually involves living in a shared home with other NDIS participants, but you can also live in SDA on your own, if that’s the option that best meets your needs. NDIS funding for Specialist Disability Accommodation includes the cost of the home you live in, but doesn’t include expenses such as rent, daily living expenses, or utilities. SDA is different from SIL (Supported Independent Living), which is funding for the supports you receive in your home.

Looking for SDA NDIS in Melbourne? Soteria is here to help with empowered housing solutions. We offer high quality NDIS SDA options in Melbourne suburbs, where you can be fully supported for an independent life. What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a support offered by the National Disability Insurance Scheme that helps you live independently, while receiving services that ensure your safety and wellbeing. SIL is designed for NDIS participants who prefer to live independently, but need support in areas like personal hygiene, transportation to appointments, making decisions, or household management. You can use SIL funding to get a support worker to help you with things like day-to-day tasks, cooking meals, cleaning your home, shopping and social activities.

SIL can be accessed in your own home, or while living in shared accommodation with other NDIS participants who are also receiving SIL funding. The primary goal is to give you an opportunity to lead an independent life and make autonomous decisions. By receiving tailored support according to your unique needs, you can learn essential skills, gain confidence, and stay safe and well.

It’s worth keeping in mind that SIL is a different support to SDA. Under the NDIS, SIL focuses on providing individuals with the necessary assistance to live independently while SDA focuses on providing suitable accommodation options for people with significant functional impairments or high support needs.
