How is SIL different from SDA?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is about the supports needed to live independently, while Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is about the specific housing features and modifications for people with high support needs.

SIL provides funding for supports that help people with disability live more independently. It covers the support needed for everyday tasks like getting dressed, cooking, cleaning, and going out into the community. It can be used for things like having a support worker or living with others who provide help. SIL funding is flexible and can be used in different types of homes – like private houses or shared living arrangements, such as a group home for NDIS participants.

Specialist Disability Accommodation is about the physical housing itself. It’s for people with very high support needs who require specific features in their homes. SDA funding covers the cost of housing that has been designed or modified to meet the resident’s needs. It includes different types of housing like homes with accessibility features, extra security, or specialised equipment. SDA funding is separate from the support services, and is only for housing.

You can receive both Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding under the NDIS. These two supports are not mutually exclusive, and you may be eligible for and require both types of assistance at the same time.
